Binance Pivots in Europe: Withdraws License Application in Greece, Changes Course
Binance has decided to seek approval from a different member state to maintain its operations in the European Union, withdrawing its MiCA license application in Greece.
Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, has made a significant shift in its regulatory strategy for the European market. While the company officially announced the termination of its licensing process in Greece, it aims to obtain authorization from another member state to provide services under MiCA, the European Union’s comprehensive crypto-asset regulation. This move is seen as an effort by the exchange to establish its corporate presence in Europe on a more solid foundation.
According to EU rules, cryptocurrency platforms must obtain a license from at least one member state to operate freely across the 27-country trade bloc. Ahead of the critical June 30 deadline, Binance changed course after evaluating the timeline of the process in Greece. Gillian Lynch, the company’s Head of Europe and UK, stated that this decision is not a retreat but rather part of a strategy to be permanent in the European market.
Binance Maintains Its Presence in the European Market
Binance plans to continue serving its users in Europe with its strong corporate presence and extensive operational network. Company officials expressed full confidence that they would obtain a license from another EU country in the coming months. It was emphasized that user funds are completely safe and that users will be informed directly of any changes.
Regulators in countries such as Greece, Ireland, and Latvia are known to closely monitor the exchange’s past legal processes and corporate structure. Binance has not yet announced which country it will submit a new application to, but it has accelerated its efforts for MiCA compliance. The company reiterated that Europe is a critical market for them and that they will maintain their position in the region by fully complying with regulations.
