Bitcoin Reclaims $76,000, but Outflows Continue: What’s Standing in the Way of a Recovery?

As Bitcoin climbed back above $76,000, $430.2 million flowed out of U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs on Thursday, bringing net outflows for the week’s first four trading days to about $870 million.

According to price data cited in a CoinDesk report, Bitcoin was trading around $76,106 on Friday. Although it reclaimed the $76,000 level it lost during Thursday’s U.S. session, it was still down more than 5.3% over the past 24 hours. The CoinDesk 20 index, which tracks the broader crypto market, fell 6.28% over the same period.

Outflows resume after a day of inflows into ETFs

According to SoSoValue data, U.S.-listed spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded net outflows of $430.2 million on Thursday. Fidelity’s FBTC accounted for $199.9 million of the outflows, while BlackRock’s IBIT accounted for $105 million.

Following net inflows of $74.6 million on Wednesday, the subsequent selling brought weekly net outflows to $869.8 million through Thursday’s close. Thus, despite the partial price recovery, ETF flows showed no strong return of demand.

U.S. demand remained weak during the previous rally

Open interest in Bitcoin futures remained broadly flat during Wednesday’s rally, indicating that the move did not come alongside strong new leveraged demand. Bitcoin trading at a discount on Coinbase compared with Binance was also viewed as a sign that buying demand from the U.S. remained limited.

Alongside the recovery of $76,000, whether ETF flows and U.S. spot buying will strengthen is also becoming important to the recovery.

Tech sell-off spread to crypto

The Nasdaq ended Thursday down 5.5%, while the S&P 500 closed down 4.3%. FalconX and GSR analysts linked the sell-off to concerns that Democrats’ midterm election victory could slow investment in AI data centers, as well as doubts about returns on major infrastructure spending.

Simon-Peter Massabni of XS.com also said asset managers were selling alternative assets to meet margin calls and reduce leverage in their portfolios.

Liquidation losses reach $1.26 billion

According to CoinGlass data, $1.26 billion in leveraged crypto positions were liquidated over the past 24 hours tracked by the source. $1.12 billion of that total came from bullish long positions.

The forced position closures that stood out in the sharp sell-off that began the previous day were accompanied by newly reported ETF outflows. Alongside price, the channels through which demand might return are being watched to assess whether the current recovery will last.
