Ethereum Classic in brief
Ethereum Classic is the proof-of-work smart contract network that kept the original rules after the 2016 DAO fork; its native asset is ETC.

Ethereum Classic is an open blockchain that runs smart contracts and is secured by proof of work. Its native asset is ETC, which pays for transaction fees on the network. Ethereum Classic shares its early history with today’s Ethereum, but since 2016 it has been a separate chain with its own coin and community. Holding ETC is not the same as holding ETH.
How did Ethereum Classic come about?
In 2016, an investment contract on Ethereum called The DAO was exploited and a large amount of ETH was drained. Most of the Ethereum community backed a hard fork that rewrote the chain’s history to recover the funds. Users and miners who rejected that change kept running the original chain. That chain is the network known today as Ethereum Classic.
The split rested on the idea that “code is law”: Ethereum Classic supporters argued that transactions confirmed on chain should not be reversed after the fact. The principle still shapes how the network is governed. Protocol changes are debated through a proposal process known as ECIPs.
How does it differ from Ethereum today?
The clearest difference is consensus. Ethereum moved to proof of stake in 2022, while Ethereum Classic kept proof of work. ETC is mined with the Etchash algorithm. After Ethereum’s Merge, some GPU miners moved to ETC and the network’s hash rate rose.
Ethereum Classic is compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine, so many contracts and tools written for Ethereum can run with small adjustments. However, applications, tokens and bridges on the two networks are independent. Sending an asset over the ETC network when the recipient expects Ethereum can lead to losses.
How is ETC supply set?
Ethereum Classic’s monetary policy is defined in ECIP-1017. The block reward paid to miners falls by 20% every 5 million blocks, which caps total supply at roughly 210 million ETC. Reward reductions slow the pace of new supply, but they contain no rule about which way the price will move.
51% attacks and security
On proof-of-work networks, security depends on the total hash power of honest miners. Ethereum Classic suffered several 51% attacks in 2019 and 2020, in which attackers rewrote part of the chain to double-spend coins. Afterwards, some exchanges began requiring far more confirmations for ETC deposits.
The network’s hash rate has grown substantially since then, yet confirmation requirements still vary between platforms. When depositing ETC, check which network and how many confirmations the receiving service requires.
How to read the market data
The price, volume and market cap on this page show the overall ETC market. Liquidity on the specific ETC/USDT or ETC/TRY pair you trade may differ. Sharing a common origin with Ethereum does not mean the two assets move together. Network usage, miner interest and exchange depth should be assessed separately. You can compare other coins on the markets page.
