Sky in brief

Sky is the new name of MakerDAO, the issuer of the DAI stablecoin. The MKR governance token is being converted to SKY, and the ecosystem’s new stablecoin is USDS.

Sky is the new name of MakerDAO, one of the oldest DeFi projects on Ethereum. Since 2017, MakerDAO had issued DAI, a stablecoin minted against crypto collateral. In 2024 the project became Sky: the MKR governance token can be upgraded to SKY, and DAI to the new stablecoin USDS. The price data on this page refers to the SKY token.

Why did Maker (MKR) become Sky?

The restructuring aimed to open the ecosystem to a wider audience and simplify governance. MKR holders can convert at a rate of 1 MKR to 24,000 SKY. Since September 2025, late conversions have been subject to a penalty that started at 1% and rises by one point each quarter. Most MKR trading volume on exchanges has moved to SKY.

Anyone still holding MKR should check the conversion terms in the official Sky interface and governance decisions. Conversion of MKR held on an exchange depends on that platform’s own announcements.

How do DAI and USDS work?

DAI and USDS are stablecoins that aim to stay close to the US dollar. Users can lock crypto assets such as ETH as collateral and mint them. If the collateral value falls below a set threshold, the position is liquidated. Over time, real-world assets such as US Treasury bills were added to the collateral pool.

DAI remains in use and can be converted 1:1 with USDS. Holders who deposit USDS in the Sky Savings Rate module earn the rate set by the protocol. That rate can change through governance and is not a guaranteed fixed interest.

What is the SKY token used for?

SKY is the ecosystem’s governance token. Holders can vote in DAO decisions on risk parameters, collateral types and the savings rate. Part of protocol revenue is used to buy back SKY. Ecosystem projects such as Spark operate as semi-independent units called “Stars” that build on Sky’s infrastructure.

Risks

The stablecoin’s dollar peg depends on collateral value, a working liquidation mechanism and the security of smart contracts. Adding real-world assets brings custody and legal risks into the system. Governance token holders manage these risks through their votes; poor decisions can affect the whole ecosystem.

How to read the market data

The price, volume and market cap on this page belong to SKY. When comparing with MKR prices, account for the 24,000 SKY = 1 MKR conversion rate. The market cap of DAI and USDS can show the ecosystem’s size more directly than the SKY price.
