Critical Move from Internet Giant Cloudflare: AI Agents to Handle Their Own Payments
Cloudflare has announced a new programmable wallet infrastructure that will allow AI agents to make autonomous payments using stablecoins.
Internet infrastructure giant Cloudflare has introduced specialized wallets for artificial intelligence (AI) agents, taking a critical step toward shaping the future of the digital economy. With this move, the company is paving the way for AI to pay for APIs, data, and online content without human intervention. To join this new ecosystem, users can already start requesting their own unique Cloudflare Wallet addresses.
The system is offered in two different structures: an Account Wallet providing spending control for individuals and organizations, and a Virtual Wallet that allows agents to perform direct transactions. Wallet owners will be able to pre-determine which vendors AI agents can purchase from, maximum transaction limits, and total budgets. This way, an AI agent won’t have to wait for approval every time while choosing the most cost-effective service.
The Internet’s New Payment Standards and the x402 Protocol
At the center of this technological transformation is the x402 protocol, developed by Coinbase to enable micro-payments. In September 2025, Cloudflare and Coinbase demonstrated their commitment to this field by establishing the x402 foundation to promote machine-to-machine payment standards. The company is also collaborating with financial giants such as Visa, Mastercard, and American Express to work on standards that will identify trustworthy AI agents.
Combined with Cloudflare’s massive network power, these wallets appear poised to fundamentally change the internet’s payment rails. Working in integration with the recently announced Monetization Gateway, this system will enable AI agents to become economic actors in their own right. Funding and payment features are expected to be activated for all users very soon.
