a16z, one of the crypto sector’s largest investors, reportedly plans to remove “Crypto” from the name of its flagship blockchain fund and expand its investment focus beyond cryptocurrencies.
According to a report by Wu Blockchain, citing The Information, Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) is preparing to change both the fund’s name and its investment focus. The report also suggests that one of the fund’s founding members will leave.
The change may go beyond the name
The reported plan would allow the fund to invest in areas outside crypto as well. The proposed name change is therefore being discussed alongside an expansion of its investment scope. The report does not indicate a decision to end crypto investments entirely.
The latest fund was roughly half the size of its predecessor
a16z Crypto closed its fifth crypto fund at $2.2 billion in May 2026. The company’s fourth fund, raised in 2022, totaled $4.5 billion.
The amount raised for the new fund was thus roughly half the size of the previous fund. The reported plans concerning the name and investment focus have emerged after the difference in scale between the two funds, while the reported changes are not being presented as a completed withdrawal of capital.
