Crypto Move from Japanese Giant with 14,000 Branches: This Altcoin’s Era Begins in Stores

Japanese retail giant Lawson has launched a pilot program to introduce payments using the yen-pegged stablecoin JPYC in its stores.

As the daily use of cryptocurrencies continues to grow, a revolutionary step has come from Japan. Lawson, the country’s third-largest convenience store chain, is preparing to accept payments via stablecoin at one of its Tokyo locations. This move is seen as a critical milestone for the integration of digital assets with traditional commerce.

According to information shared by Nikkei, this pilot program, set to begin in early August, is being conducted in collaboration with telecommunications giant KDDI and crypto wallet firm HashPort. The system, which will be tested at a store in Tokyo’s Takanawa Gateway City district, will utilize JPYC, which is pegged to the value of the Japanese yen. Having passed Japan’s strict regulatory oversight, this digital asset is establishing a solid place for itself within the country’s modern financial hubs and legal frameworks.

Stablecoin Use Gains Traction in Japan

Lawson represents a massive ecosystem with 14,697 stores across Japan and an annual sales volume exceeding 18.68 billion dollars. Such a major player testing stablecoin payments could prompt other retail giants to take action. The JPYC used in the pilot program holds the distinction of being the first yen-pegged asset registered following the 2023 licensing regulations.

Currently, with a circulation exceeding 12.36 million dollars, JPYC can be traded on popular networks like Ethereum and Polygon. Representing Japan’s technological transformation, this step aims to prove that cryptocurrencies are not just investment vehicles but also reliable payment methods. The company maintains the highest level of user trust by backing all its reserves with cash deposits and government bonds.
