First Balance Sheet from Elon Musk’s SpaceX: A $540 Million Picture for 18,000 Bitcoins

While SpaceX presented a revenue statement that exceeded expectations in its first public balance sheet, it reported a $540 million loss due to the 18,712 Bitcoins (BTC) it holds.

Elon Musk’s space technology company, SpaceX, caused a major stir in the financial world with its first-quarter data shared following its IPO. The company managed to surpass analysts’ expectations of $6.9 billion by generating $7.8 billion in revenue for the second quarter. While the giant company demonstrated strong operational growth, drawing attention with its launch services and projects like Starlink, the cryptocurrency assets on its balance sheet painted a striking picture.

The company’s net loss narrowed to $541 million from the $1 billion level in the same period last year. Adjusted EBITDA, representing earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization, nearly tripled to reach $3.5 billion. However, despite this financial improvement, fluctuations in Bitcoin’s price were felt on the balance sheet.

SpaceX’s Bitcoin Strategy: Institutional HODL and Balance Sheet Management

By maintaining its 18,712 Bitcoins (BTC) on its balance sheet, SpaceX proved it is following an institutional HODL strategy. As the price of Bitcoin fell by 33 percent during the relevant period, the value of the company’s crypto assets dropped from $1.64 billion to $1.10 billion. Although this resulted in a $540 million loss on paper, the fact that Musk’s company did not sell its assets is seen as a sign of long-term confidence in the crypto market.

Following the financial report, SPCX shares, despite closing the regular session up 10 percent, lost 6 percent in after-hours trading, pulling back to $118. Coming shortly after the company’s massive $86 billion IPO, these figures also reflect institutional investors’ cautious stance toward Bitcoin volatility. SpaceX’s strategy serves as a critical example of how large corporations position cryptocurrencies in their cash management.
