Fan tokens are crypto assets issued by sports clubs and organizations to give supporters certain perks. Holders can vote in polls the club opens, access exclusive content and events, and enter reward campaigns. A fan token isn’t a share: it gives no ownership, dividends or say in how the club is run, only access to the benefits the club defines. In that sense it’s a utility token.

How do fan tokens work?

Fan tokens are usually issued through a platform that partners with clubs. The best-known example is the Chiliz blockchain and the Socios app built on it. Tokens are first sold at a fixed price in an initial sale known as a Fan Token Offering, then listed on crypto exchanges where they trade freely. Inside the Socios app, fan tokens are generally bought with the platform’s own coin, CHZ.

Voting power depends on how many tokens a holder keeps in the wallet linked to the app. Polls typically cover topics chosen by the club, such as a kit design, the goal celebration song, a training-day event or goal of the season. Sporting and financial decisions stay with the club.

Which clubs have fan tokens?

European clubs including Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus were among the first big names to launch fan tokens on Socios. In Turkey, clubs such as Galatasaray, Fenerbahçe and Trabzonspor have also issued fan tokens. Some national teams and esports organizations use similar tokens.

Some clubs give holders of a minimum number of tokens perks such as priority ticket access, signed merchandise draws or stadium experiences. What’s on offer, and for how long, is up to the club, and the benefits attached to a token can change over time.

What drives fan token prices?

Because fan tokens trade on exchanges, their price is set by supply and demand. Big matches, cup finals, transfer news and initial sale periods can trigger short-lived price moves, and it’s common to see prices rise before a major game and fall afterward.

Thinly traded tokens tend to be highly volatile, and large sell orders can push prices down sharply. When a significant share of supply is held by the club or platform and released over time, that can also weigh on the price. There’s no direct link between a club’s results on the pitch and the value of its token.

Fan tokens vs governance tokens

Governance tokens can give holders binding votes on a protocol’s parameters and treasury. Fan token polls, by contrast, are limited to topics the club chooses, and the club decides how to act on the result. “Voting rights” therefore means something quite different for each type of token.

Frequently asked questions

Does buying a fan token support the club? Revenue from the initial sale and platform partnerships can benefit the club. Trading on the secondary market, however, doesn’t generate direct income for it.

What should I check before buying a fan token? Look at what rights the token gives, whether the club can change them, how much supply the club or platform holds and how much liquidity the token trades with.

Do I keep the perks if I move my tokens? Perks usually depend on holding the tokens in the linked app. If you sell them or move them to a wallet outside the platform, you may lose access to the club’s polls and rewards.
