What is Bitcoin dominance?
Bitcoin dominance is the ratio of Bitcoin’s market capitalization to the total cryptocurrency market capitalization. It is typically expressed as a percentage. It serves to track Bitcoin’s relative size within the market; it is not a direct measure of price returns or trading volume.
The simple formula is: Bitcoin market cap ÷ total crypto market cap × 100. Hypothetically, if Bitcoin is worth $1.2 trillion and the total market is worth $2 trillion, dominance would be 60%. This ratio does not mean that 60% of the money in the market was invested in Bitcoin on that day. Market cap is calculated by multiplying price by circulating supply.
Can Bitcoin drop while dominance rises?
Yes. If Bitcoin drops 5% while the total value of other assets drops even more, Bitcoin’s share can increase. Conversely, even if Bitcoin rises, its dominance may decrease if altcoins grow faster. Therefore, it is incorrect to read the ratio on its own as “Bitcoin is being bought” or “Bitcoin is being sold.”
For example, during a period when the entire market is shrinking, Bitcoin experiencing relatively smaller losses can cause dominance to rise. Absolute price movement and relative share answer different questions.
Why do data providers give different ratios?
Which assets are included in the total market affects the outcome. Stablecoins, wrapped tokens, and low-liquidity projects may be handled differently. How representations of the same asset are counted is also important. Before comparing one chart with another source’s chart, check the scope of the calculation.
Dominance does not mean all altcoins will move in the same direction. While the movement of a few large assets affects the total, some smaller projects may follow a different course. Evaluating the ratio alongside price, volume, and market breadth is more descriptive; a single threshold value does not guarantee a future “altcoin season.”
