Historic Move for Cryptocurrencies from the US Senate: Major Bill Passes Critical Threshold

The US Senate has initiated the first procedural vote for the Clarity Act, which aims to regulate cryptocurrency markets, moving the bill to the final voting process in September.

The US Senate has taken a critical step for the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act (Clarity Act), which will establish the legal framework for crypto assets. With a vote held early Saturday morning, the bill reached its most advanced stage on the path to becoming law. Senate Majority Leader John Thune officially brought the bill to the floor, providing momentum to the regulatory efforts the industry has long awaited.

This move is vital as the bill could not be voted on before the August recess. The procedural process known as “cloture” in the Senate, which allows controversial legislation to be brought to a vote, has officially begun. The bill requires the support of 60 senators to pass. Set to be addressed during the three-week working period in September, this regulation aims to clarify the division of authority between the SEC and the CFTC.

September Vote and Political Obstacles

Serious obstacles still remain for the bill. In particular, disagreements over combating illicit finance and stablecoin rewards persist. The most notable point of contention stems from provisions regarding government ethics. A clause in the bill that prohibits high-level officials from supporting crypto projects has caused uncertainty, particularly within the Donald Trump camp. The White House’s silence on the matter and the need for the support of at least 10 Democratic senators will determine the fate of the process.

If the required majority is not achieved in the September vote, the likelihood of the bill becoming law this year appears quite low. Although the Senate’s calendar is very tight ahead of the November elections, this process initiated by John Thune is seen as a promising signal for the crypto markets. The first procedural vote, scheduled for the second day of September, will test the US’s determination regarding crypto regulation. The success of the bill could permanently change the legal status of cryptocurrencies in the United States.
