Major Crypto Exchange Confirms Data Breach: Are Customer Details at Risk?

Bithumb, South Korea’s second-largest cryptocurrency exchange, has confirmed that personal data was leaked after unauthorized access to its internal system and is investigating whether customer information was affected.

According to Wu Blockchain, citing Yonhap News Agency, the exchange detected the security breach on October 27. An unauthorized external party accessed the mobile internal communications and work system used by employees.

Bithumb reported that the incident resulted in a personal data leak. A key focus of the investigation is whether the leaked data also included customer information. No definitive conclusion has been shared yet.

Cyberattacks also reported at two other financial institutions

In addition to Bithumb, Mirae Asset Global Investments and Daishin Securities also confirmed that their systems had been targeted in cyberattacks.

Daishin Securities said that the personal and credit information of 38,490 customers had been leaked. That figure refers to the brokerage’s customers; the number of customers affected by the Bithumb breach has not yet been determined.

South Korea’s Financial Supervisory Service (FSS) is investigating the reported incidents. At this stage, what has been confirmed about Bithumb is access to its internal system and a personal data leak; the statement reported does not mention any cryptocurrency assets being stolen.
