NYSE Strikes Deal with Crypto Platform: Could U.S. Stocks Trade Around the Clock?

The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and Blockchain.com signed a memorandum of understanding to connect users with tokenized U.S. stocks and ETFs. The plan aims to enable trading outside regular market hours, but the service has not yet launched.

According to The Block, access will be provided through a digital alternative trading system being developed by NYSE. The integration depends on the platform launching and receiving the necessary regulatory approvals. The parties did not disclose a launch date, which stocks and ETFs will be available, or the financial terms of the agreement.

Trading may not stop when the exchange closes

NYSE aims to offer 24/7 trading, fractional share purchases, funding with stablecoins, and instant on-chain settlement through its planned platform. This would allow eligible users to buy and sell tokenized versions of stocks even when U.S. exchanges have closed for their regular sessions. The plan does not mean NYSE’s traditional trading sessions are changing at this point.

The platform is planned to support both tokenized versions of existing stocks and stocks issued directly as digital tokens. According to an earlier NYSE announcement, holders will retain traditional rights such as dividends and voting rights.

The partnership goes beyond trading

ICE Data Services, part of Intercontinental Exchange (ICE), NYSE’s parent company, plans to distribute Blockchain.com’s crypto market data and analytics to its own clients. Blockchain.com aims to provide real-time stock information to its more than 44 million verified accounts by adding certain ICE and NYSE data feeds to its app.

This account count refers to the target audience for the data service; it is not confirmation that the new stock trading service will be available to all of them. The announcement also did not detail eligibility for the new service by user or country.

Through its partnership with Ondo Finance, Blockchain.com already offers tokenized stocks and ETFs to eligible users outside the United States. The service was expanded to 30 European Economic Area countries in February. The difference with the new memorandum is not a reannouncement of existing Ondo products, but a plan to connect users to NYSE’s planned digital trading platform.
