Security Alert in Cosmos EVM: Cosmos Labs Calls for Halting Certain Networks

An ongoing security incident on chains utilizing the Cosmos EVM infrastructure has come to the fore as Cosmos Labs called on certain validators to temporarily halt their networks. The impacts of recent security incidents related to Cosmos EVM have also been reported on MANTRA and KiiChain.

According to Wu Blockchain, Cosmos Labs announced that the ongoing incident affects users on several networks using the Cosmos EVM module. The company’s security and engineering teams advised validators on the Cosmos EVM chains they contacted to halt their networks.

Validators consist of computers and operators that ensure the blockchain’s operation by verifying transactions. Halting the network means that new transactions are temporarily not approved. Consequently, users transacting on the relevant networks may face risks of delayed or completely stopped transfers. Cosmos EVM serves as the infrastructure that enables Ethereum-compatible applications to run within the Cosmos ecosystem.

The Impact of MANTRA and KiiChain in the Cosmos EVM Incident

The urgency of the situation became clearer through the outcomes observed in recent security cases linked to Cosmos EVM. The MANTRA mainnet was halted for approximately 30 hours. Meanwhile, KiiChain reported that an attacker exploited a Cosmos EVM-related vulnerability 18 times and moved approximately 148.3 million KII.

The amount disclosed by KiiChain refers to a reported token movement and is not considered a verified total loss. Cosmos Labs stated that it will publish an incident report once the situation is resolved.
