The Cobie Era in Coinbase’s Base App: A Universal Transformation Spanning All Blockchains
Under the leadership of its new head, Cobie, Coinbase’s Base app is transforming into a universal trading platform covering all blockchains instead of focusing solely on its own network.
Cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase is preparing to open its ecosystem to a wider audience by making a radical change in the app strategy of its popular Layer-2 network, Base. According to statements by Base creator Jesse Pollak, the app will no longer be limited to assets on its own network and will take on a structure encompassing the entire crypto ecosystem.
At the center of this strategic transformation is Jordan “Cobie” Fish, who took over the leadership of the app last month. Cobie joined the team following Coinbase’s acquisition of the crypto fundraising platform Echo last year for approximately $375 million in cash and stock. Pollak stated that Cobie’s focus is on “building the best trading product,” emphasizing that the app will now take on a “less Base-centric” identity.
Universal Trading Platform and New Products
In the new era, users will be able to trade assets from almost all crypto ecosystems through the Base app. The platform also plans to add new products such as prediction markets and perpetual futures. Currently, the Base network hosts approximately $5 billion in decentralized finance (DeFi) assets and stands out with a daily trading volume exceeding $1 billion.
Assessing giants like Robinhood and Stripe building their own blockchain infrastructures, Pollak sees this as a “validation” of Base’s strategy. Stating that they are only at the beginning of the journey to update the global financial system, Pollak expressed that competition keeps them energized and that the market is large enough for all players.
