Unexpected Move in Bitcoin Ahead of the Fed: Investors Drop Defenses for $70,000
In the Bitcoin options market, investors have abandoned their defensive positions ahead of the upcoming Fed meeting, increasing bullish expectations focused on the $70,000 level.
As the cryptocurrency market focuses on the critical U.S. Federal Reserve (Fed) interest rate decision, Bitcoin (BTC) options investors have begun reducing their hedging activities in a surprising move. The put/call ratio, which indicates measures taken against declines and stood at 0.76 at the end of June, has dropped to approximately 0.52. This sharp decline shows that investors have stopped buying insurance against a potential pullback and have instead pivoted back toward upside gains.
Large-scale investors are accumulating heavily, particularly in call options with a $70,000 strike price and bullish strategies. The 25-delta skew data, which represents the protection premium paid against price drops, fell to as low as 4% for a one-week maturity. Although investors take long-term risks seriously with premiums at 11% to 12% for three- and six-month maturities, they see no need for a protective shield specifically for this week.
$70,000 Target Stands Out in Bitcoin Options
The implied volatility curve, which reflects the market’s expectation of future price movement, also presents a rather unusual picture. While short-term uncertainty typically increases before major macroeconomic events, one-week volatility currently stands at 34.3%, remaining below the six-month rate of 40.8%. This is interpreted as the market viewing the period after the Fed meeting as more active and risky than the present moment.
While the probability of the Fed raising interest rates is priced in at a low rate of about 15% in the markets, the Bitcoin price remains strong at the $65,000 threshold despite sell-offs in tech stocks. However, this optimistic and “thin” positioning in the options market carries the risk that a surprise decision from the Fed could amplify price movements rather than dampen them. Investors have lowered their defensive shields, trusting in Bitcoin’s resilient stance despite macro uncertainty.
