South Korea’s Largest Bank Marks a First with JPMorgan: 10 Countries on the List
South Korea’s largest bank, KB Kookmin, is launching a cross-border payment service for its corporate clients via JPMorgan’s blockchain platform, Kinexys.
As digital transformation continues unabated in South Korea’s financial sector, the country’s banking giant, KB Kookmin Bank, is taking a revolutionary step. Through its partnership with JPMorgan, the bank aims to make international payments significantly faster and more cost-effective using blockchain technology.
According to local sources, this new service will officially launch next month. KB Kookmin will earn the title of the first South Korean bank to utilize JPMorgan’s Kinexys network for import and export payments. The service will be activated at both the bank’s branches in South Korea and its Singapore branch. In the initial phase, US dollar transfers will be prioritized, and the system will cover a total of 10 countries.
Blockchain Era in Global Trade
This blockchain-based system will be used in strategic locations such as the USA, Singapore, Saudi Arabia, India, Thailand, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and South Africa. Kinexys, JPMorgan’s blockchain unit, offers advanced features like programmable payments and asset digitization. This allows corporate clients to complete their transactions almost in real-time.
The bank’s move aligns with South Korea’s vision to increase its influence in the global blockchain ecosystem. Previously having developed stablecoin projects with Avalanche (AVAX), the bank is now raising the bar in institutional payments. In this new era where the South Korean flag blends with digital assets, the integration of traditional finance with blockchain is gaining momentum. The fact that other payment providers in the country are also working on similar networks is intensifying technological competition in the region.
