Stablecoin Giant Circle Makes Strategic IBM Move: Becomes Top U.S. Blockchain Patent Holder with 1,000 Patents
Stablecoin giant Circle has become the largest blockchain patent holder in the United States after acquiring approximately 1,000 blockchain patents from technology giant IBM.
Circle, one of the leading names in the cryptocurrency world, has signed off on a strategic move that has made a major impact in the technology world. The company solidified its technological dominance in the sector by announcing the acquisition of approximately 1,000 registered patents from IBM that focus directly on blockchain technologies.
This massive acquisition includes a broad spectrum covering more than 680 patent families. The patents in question encompass solutions developed in critical areas such as banking, financial services, insurance, enterprise infrastructure, supply chain verification, and cloud security. With this move, Circle has officially taken over the title of the organization with the highest number of blockchain patents within U.S. borders.
Circle’s Future Vision and USDC Support
Company officials state that this extensive patent portfolio will particularly strengthen the USDC ecosystem and the Circle Payment Network. Additionally, the company’s own blockchain structure, Arc, and AI-focused financial tools will directly benefit from these new technologies. Circle‘s step aims to accelerate the global adoption of on-chain infrastructure and protect intellectual property rights.
IBM was already among the largest patent holders in the U.S. prior to this sale. Circle, however, had only obtained its first patent in December 2023. Acquiring such a large portfolio in a short period is considered a development that increases the company’s corporate identity and market competitiveness. Although the financial details of the acquisition have not yet been disclosed, the company’s stock performance recorded a 2.5% increase following the development.
