Wall Street Oil Traders Make Crypto Move: Choosing This Path to Manage Weekend Risks

Perpetual futures on cryptocurrency exchanges are becoming a critical risk management tool for oil traders during weekends when traditional markets are closed, fundamentally changing Wall Street’s habits.

In the world of traditional finance, Friday afternoons are generally known as a time focused on market closures and avoiding risks that might arise over the weekend. However, the 24/7 trading availability offered by cryptocurrencies is radically disrupting how commodity traders manage this process. Traders operating in the oil market, in particular, are now turning to crypto platforms to hedge their positions against potential weekend geopolitical risks. The atmosphere of crowded traditional exchange floors confined to specific hours is being replaced by a digital and seamless approach to trading.

A report prepared by Energy Aspects reveals that the structural “Friday discount” in WTI crude oil options is beginning to narrow. While traders previously preferred to close positions on Fridays that they could not intervene in over the weekend, they can now hedge—meaning protect—their risks at any moment thanks to crypto exchanges. This situation also reduces pressure on implied volatility, a technical term expressing the expectation of future price fluctuations.

Crypto Transformation in the Oil Market

Data highlights the scale of this transformation. Open interest in oil-linked contracts on the decentralized exchange Hyperliquid hit a record $1.2 billion on March 8. According to DWF Labs data, the share of weekend trading volume within total volume has increased by 25 percent over the last three months. CME Group CEO Terry Duffy emphasizes that markets must remain alert at all times, stating, “Risk doesn’t know what day of the week it is.”

Former Goldman Sachs executive Mustafa Al Niama states that traders are now filling the weekend gap with crypto. Although traditional finance giants have not yet entered this space at full capacity, institutions like the CME are continuing their initiatives with the CFTC for contracts that will trade 24/7. Crypto innovations are stretching Wall Street’s rigid working hours, signaling that the financial system will take on a completely seamless structure in the future.
