Brazil’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, Mercado Bitcoin, confirmed a cyberattack on one of its systems and temporarily suspended deposits and withdrawals.
According to a November 2 report by Wu Blockchain, Mercado Bitcoin said the security incident was brought under control quickly. The exchange halted deposits and withdrawals as a precaution, while saying customers would not suffer losses and no customer data had been leaked.
Suspicious transfers across at least 10 blockchains
In its preliminary analysis of the incident, blockchain security firm Hypernative detected more than $40 million in suspicious transfers. The investigation covers activity across at least 10 blockchains, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, and Tron.
The exchange has not yet confirmed Hypernative’s estimate of potential losses. The method used to carry out the attack also remains unclear.
Mercado Bitcoin’s statement emphasized its assurance that customers would not suffer losses, while deposit and withdrawal services remain temporarily suspended.
