IRS Issues Critical Warning to Crypto Investors: Threat Moves to the Physical World

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has issued a warning regarding a new scam method targeting cryptocurrency investors, aiming to steal digital assets through fraudulent physical letters.

Security threats in the cryptocurrency ecosystem continue to move into the physical world, transcending digital borders. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) announced that recent attempts have been made to seize digital assets and sensitive data through fake letters sent to some taxpayers. This scam attempt, which mimics the agency’s official status, aims to exploit investors’ sensitivity toward tax compliance.

In the fraudulent documents prepared, scammers are forcing users to register for a “Digital Asset Compliance Portal” that does not actually exist. IRS officials clearly stated that no such platform exists and emphasized that QR codes included in the letters must absolutely not be scanned. Furthermore, it was highlighted that people should be cautious of individuals posing as tax officials and demanding payment over the phone.

Physical and Digital Threats Increase in the Crypto Sector

In previous years, genuine notices sent by the IRS regarding crypto reporting had created a level of familiarity with such correspondence among investors. However, scammers have capitalized on this situation by developing more convincing methods. Current data published by security firm Blockaid shows that the first half of 2026 has been the “most hacked period” to date, with projects suffering over $1 billion in losses.

Threats are not limited to correspondence; physical extortion events, referred to as “wrench attacks,” are also showing a significant increase. According to CertiK‘s report, there were over 50 cases of physical attacks, particularly centered in Europe, in the first half of this year. We are entering a period where investors must be more cautious than ever to protect both their digital wallets and their physical security.
