Ripple’s Major AI Push: XRP and RLUSD Now Ready for Use
Ripple has launched a new toolkit enabling payments via XRP (XRP) and its new stablecoin RLUSD to facilitate financial transactions for AI agents.
One of the giants of the cryptocurrency world, Ripple, has taken a strategic step combining AI technology with blockchain infrastructure. The company announced a new developer kit called the XRPL AI Starter Kit, which allows developers to create AI agents capable of making payments on the XRP Ledger (XRPL). With this move, Ripple aims to center XRP and the dollar-pegged RLUSD assets in the economic interactions between AI models or service providers.
A fast and inexpensive payment rail that requires no human intervention is needed for processes such as AI agents purchasing API access or paying invoices for data operations. Ripple plans to meet this need with the XRP Ledger’s fast transaction confirmation times of 3 to 5 seconds and low transaction fees. Specifically, the ability for machines to make direct payments over the internet using the x402 protocol forms the foundation of this ecosystem.
The Era of XRP and RLUSD in AI Payments
In the current market, AI-oriented payments primarily occur via USDC, with the Base and Solana networks leading the field. According to data, approximately $41 million of the over 120 million transactions made via the x402 protocol were completed using USDC. Ripple is attempting to stand out in this competitive market with payment functions that carry no smart contract risk and operate directly at the protocol level.
The company’s new initiative aims to hit the mark in the AI economy, much like placing the Ripple logo right at the center of a target. However, for this system to become widespread, synchronization issues between web requests and blockchain payments must be overcome. Although Ripple has not yet announced a large-scale customer or transaction volume for this technology, it continues its efforts to make the XRP and RLUSD duo the primary payment unit of the AI world.
