Throws in the Towel After $200 Million Blow: Popular Altcoin Exchange Shuts Down

Centralized cryptocurrency exchange BitMart has decided to gradually phase out its operations due to operational challenges faced following the major cyberattack in 2021.

BitMart, which was once a favorite among altcoin investors in the cryptocurrency world, has announced that it will terminate its centralized exchange operations. In an official statement released by the company, it was stated that the decision for an orderly shutdown of the platform was made following an evaluation of market conditions and strategic directions. This decision is viewed as a result of the financial burden created by the massive security breach at the end of 2021, in which approximately $200 million worth of assets were stolen.

Critical Withdrawal Schedule for BitMart Users

The exchange management issued an urgent warning by publishing a three-stage timeline to ensure users do not suffer losses. As the first step of the process, new registrations, deposits, and new trading orders will be suspended on July 26, 2026. Subsequently, as of August 26, 2026, all trading services on the platform will be completely halted. The deadline for users to safely withdraw their assets has been set for January 31, 2027. After this date, platform operations will officially come to an end.

$200 Million Hack and Operational Collapse

BitMart gained significant popularity in 2021, particularly through the liquidity it provided to altcoin projects, and managed to rank among the top 10 exchanges globally by 24-hour trading volume. During that period, the exchange was one of the sector’s rising stars, receiving investment from major investors such as Fenbushi and Hack VC at a $300 million valuation.

However, the massive theft that occurred in the final months of 2021 severely damaged the exchange’s financial sustainability. The loss of approximately $200 million exhausted the exchange’s operational strength, paving the way for today’s liquidation process. It is of critical importance for users to withdraw their assets to secure wallets before the specified deadlines.
