Volume Shock in Centralized Exchanges: These Platforms Hit Record 24% Market Share
Decentralized exchanges (DEXs) have hit an all-time high with a 24% market share in spot trading volume, cementing their rise against centralized platforms.
Trading habits in cryptocurrency markets are undergoing a fundamental shift. Investors are moving away from traditional centralized exchanges (CEXs) and rapidly turning toward on-chain alternatives. Recent data shows that the share of decentralized exchanges in total spot trading volume has reached record levels, shaking the dominance of centralized exchanges.
The DEX/CEX ratio, which stood around 17% last year, has climbed to 24% as of this month. This situation proves that platforms like Uniswap and Aerodrome are now appealing to a much broader user base. While the drying up of spot trading volumes on centralized exchanges has led major companies to lay off staff, investors are opting for more transparent decentralized finance (DeFi) solutions where they maintain full control.
Volume Loss Continues for Centralized Exchanges
Total spot exchange volume has plummeted from its annual peak of $2.23 trillion to the $670 billion range, nearing its lowest level in the last 12 months. This decline was driven by a general decrease in interest in cryptocurrencies and a portion of trading volumes shifting to prediction markets. However, the most striking point is the steady increase in the share decentralized exchanges are taking from the shrinking pie. As seen in visual data, trading density is clustering at specific levels, forming a new market balance.
Technological developments in on-chain products are among the biggest factors accelerating this transition. Thanks to liquidity aggregators that consolidate assets across different platforms and fast cross-chain swap features, high-speed transactions that were once only possible on centralized exchanges can now be easily performed on DEXs. As user experience improves and costs decrease, it appears that investors’ reliance on centralized platforms will continue to diminish every day.
