As the dominance of institutional investors in the cryptocurrency markets reaches record levels, the sharp fluctuations in the market are giving way to a more stable structure under the influence of Wall Street.
The digital asset ecosystem has entered a significant maturation phase, becoming the primary playground for institutional giants at a time when retail investors’ focus has shifted toward equities. The latest market report published by Wintermute reveals that institutional investors’ share of spot trading volume has reached an all-time high of 72 percent. The rapid increase from 61 percent in the second half of last year proves that the market structure is now being shaped by professional hands.
Institutional Dominance Curbs Volatility
Institutional capital asserting its weight in the market has also significantly reduced the notorious price fluctuations of cryptocurrencies. According to data, realized volatility, which hovered around the 70 percent level in past market cycles, has retreated to 45 percent in the current period. The fact that professional investors act within specific risk limits and long-term strategies instead of short-term speculation makes the market more predictable. However, this situation leads to altcoin rallies occurring much more selectively, as institutional interest is concentrated only on specific assets.
A Major Leap in Tokenization and Derivatives Trading
Another important data point showing the deepening of the market emerges on the side of derivative instruments and tokenized assets. While altcoin option volume increased 3.4 times, the total value of tokenized real-world assets (RWA) reached $31 billion with a 50 percent increase. Monthly transfer volume in this field broke a record by exceeding $9 billion. While Wintermute predicts that retail investors will return in the next bull period, it emphasizes that institutional influence will be permanent and that professionals will continue to determine market liquidity.
