Will Crypto Influence U.S. Elections Again? Support Plan for 32 Candidates Revealed!

Crypto-friendly Fairshake announced support for 32 lawmakers from both parties in the November U.S. elections, setting spending in support of six candidates at $1 million per person.

According to CoinDesk, leading crypto political action committee Fairshake added 13 Democrats and 19 Republicans running for the House of Representatives to its new list of supported candidates. The list, made up entirely of sitting lawmakers, includes influential figures on committees that will consider crypto legislation and tax regulations.

Support from Fairshake and its affiliates for six candidates amounts to a total of $6 million. The spending will not involve direct contributions to the candidates’ campaigns, but will instead go toward independent ad buys.

Backing influential figures on crypto legislation

On the Republican side, the recipients of $1 million in support each are French Hill, chair of the House Financial Services Committee; Bill Huizenga, one of the committee’s senior members; and Bryan Steil, who heads its digital assets subcommittee.

On the Democratic side, Steven Horsford, Derek Tran, and Janelle Bynum will receive the same level of support. Horsford is among those who helped advance a bipartisan crypto tax bill through the tax committee on which he serves.

The other candidates on the list also serve on committees that could play a role in advancing crypto legislation, including those focused on taxes, financial services, agriculture, science, and the judiciary. Fairshake spokesperson Geoff Vetter said the group’s goal is to build the largest pro-crypto congressional caucus in U.S. history.

Trying to influence voters without discussing crypto in ads

A notable detail of Fairshake’s strategy is that, although the candidates it supports are chosen based on their crypto policies, crypto is not mentioned in the ads. Instead, the group focuses on issues it considers most likely to sway voters.

According to Vetter, the candidates Fairshake supported in the primaries won 53 of the 57 races. Following those results, the group is trying to strengthen the pro-crypto network in Congress by backing candidates with a strong chance of winning in the general election.

The new House list comes after the CLARITY Act, which aims to regulate how the crypto market operates, failed to advance in the Senate last month. The support plan in the House shows that the industry continues to spend on elections in pursuit of its legislative goals.
