A New Era for Bhutan’s 10,000 Bitcoin Treasury: Massive Reserve Moves to Professional Management for Yield
Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC), a special administrative region of Bhutan, has established a strategic partnership with 3iQ Corp. to professionally manage a portion of its Bitcoin (BTC) treasury.
Located in Southern Bhutan, Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC) announced that it has authorized 3iQ Corp., a firm specializing in digital asset management, to manage a section of its Bitcoin (BTC) reserves. This collaboration reveals Bhutan’s intention to actively generate yield from its crypto assets rather than merely holding them passively.
GMC plans to achieve long-term gains by following a market-neutral and low-risk investment approach through the Toronto-based company. Market-neutral strategies encompass techniques aiming to provide an average annual yield of 5% through methods such as lending or arbitrage, even if the price of Bitcoin fluctuates. GMC management refrained from sharing a specific figure regarding how much Bitcoin will be managed under this mandate.
Bhutan’s Bitcoin Commitment and Strategic Goals
Bhutan’s King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck committed 10,000 BTC for the city’s development last December. There has been long-standing curiosity about how this massive Bitcoin (BTC) reserve, valued at approximately $1 billion at the time, would be utilized. With this move, GMC aims not only for financial returns but also to create new employment opportunities and skill development programs in the technology and finance sectors for Bhutanese youth.
The country’s digital asset management has previously been the subject of some controversy. In May, officials from the state’s commercial arm, Druk Holdings, denied that Bitcoin sales had taken place; however, on-chain data proved an outflow of approximately $1 billion from the wallets. Although the source of the assets to be managed under the new partnership has not yet been disclosed, this step is seen as an effort to solidify Bhutan’s position in the global crypto ecosystem.
